An example of defamiliarization

Daybook Entry #2                                                                 May 20, 2015

Activity- Try and sell the apple for as much money as you can

Hello, I would like to try and persuade you to purchase this apple, the cost is $1,000,000.00. Now, I know you may think thats an outrageous price, but this is no ordinary apple. This apple is a magical fruit which possesses the power to make it's consumer immortal and eternally young. It will take away all sickness, make your skin beautiful and glowing, and allow you to live forever young. I know your saying to yourself "If it really works like that then why would you sell it?", well I can personally assure that this fruit works, because I have already partaken of the fruit. I ate an apple from the same tree 100 years ago, and as you can see I am still alive and as young as I was back then. So will you buy the fruit?

I think that this is a good example of defamiliarization, in allows us to write about something ordinary and familiar, like an apple, and change it into something else in order to sell it. In my writing I chose to take an everday fruit that people know and eat, and change it into something magical that allows the consumer to be immortal. I made the familiar strange by changing the way one sees the apple, by giving magic properties and making it seem like something it's not. I feel that this is a good example of taking the familiar and making it strange.

An example of Intertextuality

Daybook entry                                                                  June 18, 2015

Percy Jackson taught me Greek Mythology

My name is Brittney

and i'm majoring in Psychology

Today I am sitting

It's my first class in writing

So I can be like my favorite author

The great Rick Riordan

I hope to see different cultures

And Ancient civilizations

My passion is learning

This is my daybook entry that shows an example of intertextuality, because it takes something and repurposes for another use. We took random words from our daybook entries and turned them into a found poem. The words we used were intended to answer questions we were asked for our daybook entries, and we repurposed them in order to create a poem. Not only that but it gives new knowledge about me as well as my writings in class, which is another aspect of intertextuality.

An example where you challenged your assumptions or asked a “big question”

Reality?

Think about the things that affect who you are, and make a list

Language

Culture

Family

Money

Television

Movies

Art

Health

Sleep

Teachers

School

History

Books

Which of these apply to your literacy project story?

Culture

Movies

History

School

Language

Books

This entry is an example of writing that made me ask a big question and challenge my assumptions. Before writing this I really never thought about what affects me as a person. It really made me think and stop to ask myself, who am I? and what makes me, me? Before thinking about this, I assumed that the things that affected me as a person were just simple things like my parents, and environment growing up. I would have never thought before our discussions in class, that things such as sleep and history could affect who I am as a person, but the more I think about it the more I realize it is true.

An example of something you’d like to revise/continue writing about in the future

Daybook Entry #1                                                                               May 18, 2015

1) Who are you?  My name is Brittney, and I am a 27 year old female and resident of Concord, NC. I am a first year student at UNCC, majoring in psychology and middle school education. I love to read, draw, write, and watch all kinds of movies. I love to learn about Greek mythology and Greek history. Their culture and ancient civilization amazes me and there are many things that we have adapted and learned from their ways.

2) What are you doing?   Today I am sitting in my first day of writing class and am excited to learn all it has to offer. I hope to become a better writer and someday be able to write just as well as my favorite author, Rick Riordan. I love his books and how much thought and effort he put into researching Greek, Roman, and even Egyptian gods and goddesses. I also love how he took an issue that was important to him and intertwined it into his writings. His son is both dyslexic and ADHD and so he makes all the demigod children that way so that children just like him can connect with the characters.

3) Where are you going?  I don't know exactly where it is I am going, I hope to become a psychologist or teacher. As far as physically, I hope that one day I can travel to Greece and Rome, to see all the wonderful sites they have to offer. I want to be able to see the places the myths and stories I enjoy so much come to life. The beautiful architecture and temples that long ago were an integral part of life for the citizens of Greece.

This is an example of something I would maybe like to write more on in the future, maybe a little more in depth. The question of where I am going, is something I feel I could write a lot more about, and takes time to think about. With the amount of time we had in class to write our response, I just feel I couldn't really think about these questions as much as I would like. Even if no one ever read or saw it, I feel like I could take these questions and write more about them and it would also allow me time to get to know about myself. I feel there is more than one way and view of the answers one could write to these questions, and I would like to work more on my responses.

Your favorite in-class writing

Daybook entry                                                      June 3, 2015

Describe this classroom and how it operates:

This is a small classroom with about 15 students and a teacher. It is filled with desks that roll around and move which makes it easier to gather in groups for activities. We all come into class and do various things such as writing in our daybooks, watching videos, and getting into writing groups to discuss our projects and give/receive feedback. The teacher explains what we will be doing and the goals for the day. We use our laptops every day and our daybooks as well, a lot of people in class use outlets to charge their devices. We also learn more about each other because our class size is smaller.

Draw a scene of learning:

I chose this as my favorite in class writing because it was fun to hear all the people talk about how they saw the class in our in class discussion. I also chose it because the second half had us draw a picture of a scene of learning. I really love art and it was great to be able to add it into my writing. For this writing you had many different aspects of the classroom that you could choose to write about. You didn't have to pick to just write about the scenery or the things we did during class, but we could write about anything as long as it had to do with the classroom.
