Connections
During the semester I have made many connections with writing and other things in my life. The main connection I have made
in this class is with my other college courses and the writing I have done for those courses. I have had to look back and think
about how I have written papers in my other courses and see if I could change my writing process for the better. One of the
main difference in my writing during this course compared to that of other courses, was that I had to think about things more in
depth. In previous classes it was just research and then put the paper together, for this class I actually thought about what I was
writing and how best to write it so that it was readable for a vast audience. The last paper I wrote was for a class on Greece, and
in that paper I didn’t even think about someone else reading my paper, I wrote it thinking to myself my teacher was the only one
who would see it. I was able to take the ways I wrote in my previous classes and tweak them a bit to fit the criteria for papers in
writing class. I think it helped me more with my writing process to be able to think about how and why I wrote things in past
courses. I was able to make some real connections with the work, my processes, and just writing in general.
The second connection I have made is with other students and their work and ideas. My past writing has always been me writing
and then turning it in, but for this class I was able to connect with other students and get feedback on how to better my writing.
While writing papers for my history classes I would have to write the rough draft and turn it in, with only the teacher giving me
comments on how to fix things. For this class it was great to be able to hear what students who were going through the same
things as me had to say about my work. It is really helpful to be able to hear what other students have to say, who have the
same exact assignment even if the subject matter is different. I have been able to connect with others not only to hear what they
have to say, but to also be able to help them and give them feedback as well.
The third connection I have been able to make, is with things that interest me and things I love. In writing I think it is important
to be able to write about something you have an interest in, for most college courses you have to write on things that may not
hold your attention. For this writing class I have been able to write about subjects that interest me and that I may not normally
be able to write about in other courses. For one paper I was able to write about the series of Dragonball, another I wrote about
Percy Jackson and Greek mythology, and the last paper was on bowling. All of these things are something that I was able to
write better on because I had a connection with them in some way. Being able to write about subjects that you feel strongly
about can make for better writing. Rather than having to write a 6 page paper on yoga, which I have done in the past, that just
becomes a task you want to finish as soon as possible. While writing on yoga I just became bored with the subject and by the
end when I started to write I just gave up and put things on paper without any flow to them. Making connections in writing with
things that you love helps to keep you on track and allows you to better your writing, by putting the passion you have for the
subject into your writing.
In this course I have made many connections in writing with many other things, but I feel that the connections I have made with
my other classes, students/their work, and things that interest me, have been the strongest of all.
