UWRT 1101 UNCC

DR.Rand

Hello, and Welcome to my first ever webpage, my name is Brittney and this page is for my writing class at UNCC and will house my writings and assignments for the class. First off i'll tell you a bit more about me, I am 27 years old, so being in college is a little strange to me. I chose to go back to college so I could learn more and get some kind of degree. My goal is to get a degree in Psychology and also a teaching degree, though i'm not sure which one yet. I also plan on minoring in English, which mean that I will be doing a lot more writing in the future. I don't know if i'm any good at writing, but I really enjoy it and want to gain the knowledge needed to be a better writer. Hopefully in this class, I will learn the skills needed to improve my writing and be able to write some interesting stuff. One day in the future if I have time, I want to be able to write on some fanfiction sites like A03, and be as good as some of those who write stories on there. My other goal in writing is to one day maybe write a novel or short story that's as great as something from Stephen King, or any other great author. I know that will probably never happen, cause I don't think anyone will ever be as great a horror writer as Stephen King, but one can dream. This class will have us looking at different themes in writing, such as literacy, language, and identity. We will be posting various projects and writing assignments to our webpages,so this webpage will be filled with writings on many things. There will also be blogs and reflections about what we have done and will be doing in class. The reflections will be a little bit about how we felt about what we wrote for various projects. There is also a connections page, this is a page that will be about the various connections I have made in my writing. I will think about the connections between my writing, ideas, other classes I have been in, or anything else I can connect with. So yeah that's a little bit about why this website is here for anyone that may stumble across it, and the reason there will be a lot of writing on here.

Mid-Term

Reflection

During this class I have made many connections with fellow students and the ways in which they write. I have been able to see their work and the ideas they have come up with and build on my own writing. I have been able to lend my feedback to other students, as well as receive it from them. I have been able to use what I learned in other classes while writing papers, and applied it to this class, as well as change some of the ways I wrote on previous papers. The connections I have made with this class and my other classes that have required writing, have broadened my abilities to be a better writer. I will now be more confident in future classes when writing papers and be able to write things I may have felt I couldn’t before. There are many ways in which I can connect this class to my future life. It will allow me to gain skills and abilities that will allow me to get a better job, and maybe even write something substantial later in life. With this class I can write a better resume, now knowing what is allowed of me and what is not. With these connections my writing skills have increased and have helped me to learn things I never knew I could do in writing.

For me my writing process is really just sitting down and having the time to do so. I like to be able to concentrate on what I am writing without any hindrances. I prefer to write a paper or essay on something that interests me otherwise I quickly get bored and my paper is not as good as one on a subject I enjoy. I also think that time is a factor in my process, because if I have a time limit, then I seem to do better, than if I have a lot of time. That may sound backwards, but if I am given more time I find that I will procrastinate and never get anything done. If given a week I can quickly turn out a paper, but if you give me an entire month then I will wait till the last possible day, probably forgetting about it, and end up doing it a few hours before it’s due. My work severely suffers this way because I just write down random things and don’t think about how to put it together. My writing process is for the most part simple, a quiet space with a good amount of time and I can write. I haven’t really changed my writing process since I was in high school except for the main things like grammar, punctuation, and how to structure a paper. The one thing that has changed in my writing from the beginning of the semester, is that now when I have to write about something i’ll have different perspectives on how to write about it. I will remember the feedback from my fellow students and teachers and think about those things before beginning.

On my assignments I have received some feedback and comments from fellow students. This feedback was very helpful and made me feel on some assignments that were confusing, that I was not the only one having a hard time. I felt like after looking at others work and reading the comments, I was better able to understand certain things and felt like as classmates we helped each other. The feedback from my teacher helped as well and allowed me to fix the things and rearrange some things that I was struggling to work out. Without the feedback of others my work would not have been as great because I would not know what to fix and I really appreciated all the feedback and comments I was given. I feel like I was okay at giving feedback and commenting on things to the other students. I tried the best I could to make sure I was helping them or at least encouraging them when they were writing really well.

Out of all the things I am most proud of my graphic novel, which took some time to do. I really love to be able to write, but being allowed to add illustration to the words helps me. I like to be able to see the story as well as read it, and with that project I was able to do just that. I am also proud of my class participation, I have had bad experiences so far in other classes. In this class however the other students seem to be easy to talk to and understanding of one another. I have always been kinda shy and hated doing any kind of work involving others, I liked to work alone. In this class though it seems like everyone is friendly and doesn’t criticize what you do, but helps you build onto the ideas you have. During the semester so far I have thought about many things, wrote about some things I had the completely wrong definition of, and even got to incorporate some artwork into. I have enjoyed learning and writing in this class so far and hope that my writing continues to get even better.
